It's been a while since I've geeked out on a technology like Falcon
- Estevan Carlos Benson
Like many of you here I came across UVI's Falcon while looking for a faster but robust, synthesis solution. I was actually drawn to the Lua scripting options. It's mentioned as an afterthought in their marketing but it seemed like a great feature for musicians, artists, sound designers, music technology businesses, and interactive projects.
When I began the process of understanding the feature I was a bit surprised. The documentation is awkward, sterile, and under nourished in my opinion. I was hoping to see more screenshots, more examples, and clearer language. At the time I couldn't find any resources that actually explained Lua scripting for Falcon. Worse yet, I naively assumed that I could look at the code of all the Falcon instruments provided. That's not the case.
My Experience
Up until my discovery of Falcon much of my interactive audio experience revolved around Max/MSP. You may have heard of this technology as it is now integrated in Ableton Live (Max for Live) and it provides a programming paradigm that allows you to synthesize sound, process MIDI, and more.
Max has a philosophy of sharing. It is assumed and reasonably expected that many Max developers will share some of their code just in the same way many developers share their code on Github. I wanted to bring some of that mindset into my course, Lua Scripting for UVI Falcon. The course will provide a lot of instruction along with code examples that will eventually be published to Github. There is latent potential for a lively Falcon instrument community and the only way this comes into fruition is by sharing more knowledge.
Works in Progress
As a part of this course, I am creating Falcon instruments that can function as learning tutorials. I'm excited by the potential of this approach and look forward to sharing more as this course nears completion.
